Art history and an infectious sense of joie de vivre coalesce in the mixed media paintings of South African born painter Wendy Cohen. Abstraction proliferates across the artist’s oeuvre, reminiscent not only of Picasso’s cubist figurations but also of the African culture that inspired Picasso and Wendy herself.

My artwork has been influenced by my culture of origin as I have been surrounded by indigenous tribes who created colorful works of art without using sophisticated materials.

Vibrant and at times unexpected colors imbue the paintings with a sense of vitality, while fervent brushstrokes and thick applications of paint further cultivate engaging scenes of activity and excitement. It is the whimsical juxtapositions of colors, forms, and mediums that demonstrate wendy’s contemporary sensibilities and style.

Striving to transport her viewers and immerse them in a fantastical world of imagination and wonder, Wendy leads audiences on a journey to the surreal and playful and away from the mundane and predictable.

Wendy Cohen has lived and worked in Sydney, Australia since 2000.

Imagination is more than knowledge.  Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.
