Through work
reminiscent of Klee in its textures and palette
and Picasso in the use of the human face as a
flexible sculptural form, Wendy Cohen weaves a
mythical, mystical and surreal journey. Wendy says that
her inspiration lies in the way she continually
challenges herself with stimulating ideas that
rise above the predictable and the mundane.
Cubism is an influence clearly present in
Wendy works, but her color palette and the
striking vigor of each composition testify to
more than solely contemporary sensitivities. She explores the effects of contrasts between
angular and curvilinear forms, bright neon
colors and deep, rich hues, smoothed area of
color and ridged, textured buildups of paint and
other media and spaces of figuration and total
abstraction.
Wendy Cohen's paintings are
works of infinite energy and possibility, fixed
for a beautiful moment before leaping jovially
onwards into an exuberant journey
of wonderment and adventure.
Her
works are a feast for the eyes and as she was
born in Cape Town, South Africa, Wendy grew up being influenced by the rich
and majestic african culture. She presently
lives and works in Sydney, Australia where has
been exhibiting her work since 2004.
